Default [FAQ] Enable MP3 Support In Fedora

I don't have any other distro's installed to try this out on, but it worked in FC6. *It'll work on any Fdora or Yellow Dog version --Chipp*

Open up terminal, type su to login as root then type your password when asked.

su

You are now logged in as root. Now we will install some software to play MP3s within FC6.

yum install xmms xmms-mp3

This uses yum to download and install xmms media player and xmms-mp3 support and will automatically download all the dependicies.

Say yes to download and install everything.

Once installed go to Applications & Sound and Video. Xmms is called Audio Player.

Open Audio Player.

At the top left of the player click the down arrow. Options > Preferences.

On the Audio I/O Plugins tab scroll down till you see:

MPEG Layer 1/2/3 Placeholder Plugin

Now click Enable Plugin. This will disable the MP3 placeholder plugin and use the xmms-mp3 decoder that we installed earlier.

Apply the changes and close Xmms. Open Xmms and try playing a MP3.

Good luck

Don't need to do this on Fedora 9. Just run su - codeina and check off the free MP3 plugin. Then all the stock Fedora apps (e.g. Totem, Rhythmbox) will play MP3s.
