Default How to: read & write to your NTFS partition with ubuntu 7.04

1. Set up your sources

To get the latest ntfs-3g, you will need first to add a repository to your source.list. Open a terminal and type

Code:
gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
then type in your password of course.

now at the end of the file add this.
Code:
deb http://flomertens.free.fr/ubuntu/ Feisty main main-all
you now hit save and then quit.

2. Installation

to install type this into the terminal
Code:
wget http://flomertens.free.fr/ubuntu/givre_key.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
now upgrade your system

first
Code:
sudo apt-get update
second
Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade
3. Automatic Configuration

you need to install ntfs-config which will automatically install ntfs-3g
Code:
sudo apt-get install ntfs-config
launch ntfs-config from the menu (in system tools) or from the terminal
Code:
gksu ntfs-config
you will get something like this

what you want to do is where it says
Quote:
<Click here to set a mount point>
type the name you want for the drive under the mount point. for example windows disc. then click add box to add the check mark. then click apply
do not add the /media when typing the mount point name. when you click the add box it adds the /media for you

you will then be taken to this screen.

hit ok and you are done.

This is SUCH a cool post. When I tried Ubuntu last year, the number one shortcoming was it would not read my NTFS partitions. And trying to get plain, common sense language from Linux Users is simply impossible. So anyone that can decode Linux directions is a SOLID resource to have around.

Once I got Ubuntu to read NTFS, it's usefullness went up exponentially.

i would like to add that if you dual boot with windows and windows crashes that you then need to go into windows and shut it down properly or your mounted hard drive in ubuntu will not show up.

and if someone could please try this i would really appreciate it so that i can know if it works for other people.

I don't know the answer to the question (above) but it reminded me of why I quit using Ubuntu. I was running dual-boot (XP & Ubuntu 6.06) and when I tried to take Ubuntu off the list of boot options the Grub messed up my XP (somehow) and I had to do a complete New Install.

Never went back to Ubuntu after that.
