Default Unable to Enable nvidia Driver

Fresh Ubuntu 7.04 install, I installed nvidia-glx, reconfigure xorg to get a fresh layout, run 'nvidia-glx-config enable', and X crashes when it tries to restart. I'll grab the output in a second, but dependent on my xorg.conf it says things like no screens found.

**EDIT**
I tired 'startx > start.log' but it didn't capture the output

The error though, barring some other junk, is "No screens found." I can start X with "Driver "nv"" but not with "Driver "nvidia""

And before somebody posts it, I cannot use restricted driver manager. It tells me that none of my hardware needs it

try this:

I had the same problem the first time I tried to configure my second monitor. I was using the regular drivers. Then I found out the newer drivers from Nvidia have a GUI to configure resolutions, multiple monitors, refresh rates, etc. If the trick above gets you running, go get the drivers from Nvidia.

Then I found out the newer drivers from Nvidia have a GUI to configure resolutions, multiple monitors, refresh rates, etc. If the trick above gets you running, go get the drivers from Nvidia.

try this: saw this in some forum for someone who had the same problem as you.
1. Download the driver file (*.run)
2. CTRL-ALT-F1, log in, then run sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
3. Change directory to where you downloaded the driver file, then create a new script called install.sh with the following lines:#!/bin/sh
if [ "$USER" != root ]; then echo "Please run as root."; exit 1; fi
KERNEL_HEADERS=/usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r)
sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.03-pkg2.run -n -s --x-prefix=/usr/lib64/xorg/ --kernel-source-path=$KERNEL_HEADERS
4. Run chmod 755 install.sh, then sudo ./install.sh
5.Start back up gdm with sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start.

Now if you are using Kubuntu, the same steps may work if you just change the /etc/init.d/gdm part to the appropriate command that restarts the desktop environment on your system.
