Default Paldo 1.12 - From Switzerland comes a new flavor of Linux

Quote:
Most of the time when one thinks of a product from Switzerland, one thinks of efficiency. Watches that simply work forever, banks that keep money forever and chocolate that tastes great almost forever. Software generally doesn't come to mind when thinking of Swiss, at least not for most people. However, two students at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland are about to change that.

Recently, I was reading a comment on a new distro, well relatively new, that was pretty damn bold. In his interview on www.linuxtitans.com/site/interview author Superbnerb claims "You've heard it here first people. This distro will be on the tip of everyone's toungue, in about 3 months. Watch the Distrowatch rankings (Or the linux titans rankings, coming soon). This distro will make it to the top ten in a year's time." Now, I have reviewed a boat load of distros, was one of the first to do reviews on little ones such as LinuxMint, Dreamlinux and PCLinuxOS, even had interviews with several of those distro authors, and never have I had the audacity to predict something like this. Simply put, I had to give this Swiss distro a go, reach out to their developers myself and see how this thing ticks....

Installation

Paldo, being a relatively new distro on the scene suffers from the one area that all new distros suffer at first: documentation, or lack thereof. The one key exception of that seems to be on installation, there is an excellent guide on their website, but if you are installing this live and cannot get your network card working, then one would have a hard time following the example. We are going to follow our own experience here, show you what we saw in our VMWare example, and see what we end up with.

The first quirk was that the installer defaulted to English (Switzerland), so be careful not to hit enter. Not sure what the difference is, but I am sure it would have been interesting. The first thing I noted was a lack of flavor in many of the boot screens. I know this is typically something done last, putting the icing on the cake so to speak, but many people are afraid of lines of code flashing by. A simple splash screen to hide all the inter workings of Linux might be well suited.

idk why every distro just shows the basic desktop... ALL the default Linux desktops look the same; posting the same ones doesn't show anything special about the distro they're trying to promote.

Gentoo shows gadgets and stuff they're using on theirs, though.
