I purchased a new laptop over the break and am running a dual boot vista - linux system. When I install i have to disable apic...then it boots and I can install. When it gets to the spash screen the screen goes black and becomes unresponsive...Is this a video driver issue?

I tried to configure ALSA for audio and recompiled the driver to no avail. I then tried to install OSS4 (which supports my audio chip)using the .deb package but it would never install correctly. When i ran sudo soundon it gave me the error that the directories don't exist which completely baffles me. Any ideas?

My sister's cheap-o laptop won't run any version of Linux. The problem you're experiencing sounds to be similar. I have no idea what would cause it, let alone fix it.

Ya it's funny because I purchased the laptop with the intent to run linux....guess I might have to stick with Vista 64 for now.

If you intended to run Linux, couldn't you have asked them to take your windows license so you don't have to pay for it at least?

Is there something blocking us from installing other OSs on these laptops?
