Side note: Unbuntu has its problems too. I had two "not responding" windows and Azureus was installed but wouldnt run. I have to say it is snappier than windows (even though it is on a usb external) and is more pleasant to use. Now I just need to find a decent wireless card for aircrack

Yeah, Linux sometimes does this thing where things just "don't run." It's like.. Say I try to open Firefox. The cursor will bounce with the FF icon for the 15 seconds (the time I set it to work and then stop at for a time out), and then nothing will happen. No error messages, no nothing. It weirds me out sometimes, but the problem is quickly remedied by just hitting open again...
Try running things through the terminal. When you do that, you get a log of everything the program has to report. It could be that you're missing dependencies and stuff, and the GUI will never tell you this. Running it in the terminal can reveal these such problems.
I've used Linux and OSX on USB external HDDs, and they're still faster than anything windows on an internal drive
