I installed Ubuntu on an external drive and It never asked me where to install grub. Well of course it installed it on the external and now I need the external attached to boot to Vista. Is there any way I could either have grub installed on my laptops HD or us vista's OS loader? . . or do I need to do a reinstall? . . in that case how would I change the process?

well if you unplug the external drive, then do a fix mbr, it will fix vista. then just plug in the external when you want to boot linux, and boot from main hdd for vista.

This sounds like a good plan.

I ended up reformatting my external w/ my Vista drive disconnected and everything works flawlessly now.
Side note: Unbuntu has its problems too. I had two "not responding" windows and Azureus was installed but wouldnt run. I have to say it is snappier than windows (even though it is on a usb external) and is more pleasant to use. Now I just need to find a decent wireless card for aircrack
