Default aircrack wireless card

*********
Before commenting below please note that I am a MIS major @ FAU and am doing a semester project in my security course. I am demonstrating was to infiltrate a wireless system so this is legit.
*********

I am having a hell of a time finding if my internal Intel ABGN card is compatible with aircrack. If it isnt could someone point me to a USB adapter that is? . . the instructions are soo confusing for linux newbs like me

Thanks

I don't know about ABGN, but you can probably find an ABG card that's compatible if it has an atheros chip. Just google them, they're all over ebay and amazon.

Do not use a USB Adapter. They are not compatible. Does your notebook support PCMCIA? If so, you will want a card listed on here: http://madwifi.org/wiki/Compatibility

At this time MadWifi does not support any USB devices. It's unlikely that MadWifi itself will be extended for USB support, as the USB devices have a largely different architecture. Background information on that can be found in ticket #33.
Yes, I know you are using aircrack-ng, but trust me on this one. I also do security auditing as a profession.

Bleh. I havn't had a ton of luck with ExpressCards, but I havn't tried many either. If you're not scared of taking your lappy apart, buy an internal card based on the Atheros chipset and pull your internal one out and replace it...

I could but I like having 'N' capability . . . I may look into that though and just keep mine as a spare.

I need to find a cheap one of these

for $25, you can't go wrong. It is a simple swap, and you can do whatever you need to do...

Well, considering you havn't even told me what kind of lappy you have, how can I be 80%+ certain? If your lappy has a Mini-PCI slot, you'll be fine though.

I wouldn't be afraid of doing this at all. I don't know what brand of laptop you have, however most are VERY easy to swap wifi cards in (my E1705 has a single screw holding a cover plate. That's all you have to remove to change out wifi cards).

and why couldn't you put your N back in once you've finished your project??? I'll even buy the aircrack wifi card off you when you're done with it

((EDIT)) Ohh yeah.... go with what's certain. Many of these types of programs (i use them) are very finicky. They're extremely purpose built, and being user dev software, they're generally not updated alot or well supported. Buy something you know will work and save yourself a headache.
