lol I know of "OSS" as "Open Source Software." I thought you were saying open source sucks lol

Creative is the definition of suck, though, if you ask me. I'm quite convinced that their "good sound" comes only from software, and not the cards themselves.

I'm glad Auzentech is releasing linux drivers in Q1 '08, which is hopefully pretty soon . Maybe I'll dual boot linux again when that happens.

The thing that ticks me off abotu Creative's open source driver, is that its for 64-bit only, now this wouldn't be a problem, except Adobe have decided that they can't be bothered to release a 64-bit compatible version of Flash for Linux.

Whilst that may not sound like a big deal, if you think about it, Flash is used for an awful lot of stuff on the web these days, from videos to games. So it's a big deal to me.

Right now I'm using onboard sound in 32-bit Ubuntu, but I would much rather prefer it if i could use my X-fi card with it instead.

Isn't auzentech a company owned by creative? Or was that m-audio? Or both or what?

OSS has many advantages over ALSA. Many old school Linux Gurus prefer it. However, ALSA does see more development and is more popular (and I guess it's also easier to use/implement).

That would be terrible if Auzentech was owned by Creative, I know for a fact they aren't, but I don't know about m-audio, I don't think so though.

How does OpenAL compare to both of those? You've got to admit that Windows wins when it comes to sound, does linux have ASIO (or something similar) even?

Srs? Windows has by far the worst audio subsystem of any OS. In fact, instead of making a new one, they made it easier to bypass their horrible one.

Core Audio > alsa/OSS > DirectSound.

All you have to do is use Synaptic to get "flashplugin-nonfree" when using 64-bit Ubuntu 7.10 and you'll have flash working.
