it is for a school project, and the purpose of the server, is so that the users at home could access the network drives via the school's network, and my teacher told me that the main server set up doesnt matter, because he can do this with linux just fine

Well at this point using a switch\hub to get to server isn't necessary. Basically your server will connect to the main server, and anyone using it will be connecting via the internet. So what you need to do is setup your authentication (you said LDAP). This will allow home users to log into the server and then proxy from it to the network drives (hence getting around the schools security). Since i know nothing about LDAP i can't help with that but at this point that's all that really needs to be done. The server needs to be setup so that a remote user can login to the server, and after authenticating they can proxy from it onto the network. The main server would also have to be configured to allow this, but that's not part of your project. So now you need to do research LDAP and how to set it up.
