Hey OCN, I have a bit of a problem that I need help with, or a point in the right direction. I need to make a server, inside a network. That server needs to go to a hub\switch, and that hub\switch goes to the client, and all within my school network. now the client needs to get its ip automatically through DHCP, also be able to access the internet through the server via proxy, and to get user authentication (LDAP), and get NFS. I can post a diagram if necessary. thanks in advance

Here's a start.
1) what will this server be connection to (ie router, main server, etc) 2) what is the architecture for the schools network 3) what OS is the main server running 4) get yourself up to speed on LDAP and NFS. The networking part of this will be easy. Solaris is a server OS. It's automatically configured to handle things like DHCP, proxy, and internet access control. The hard part of this build won't be anything on the client end, but making this new server integrate into the existing network.

I'm at work and can't see any image hosting sites. Please upload any photo's to OCN and then link them in the picture so i can see. You need to find out how the main server is setup. If the main server is using Active Directory (very common) then you're going to have to have major problems. It's extremely hard to get a Linux server to authenticate through a Active Directory server.

How would I go about finding out if it is an active directory?

I'm assuming this server is a project for some class that you're taking???? If so, then you'll need to go to the IT department for your school and have a chat with them. You'll need to explain why you want the info (and probably provide proof) before they're going to start giving you any details about how the schools server is setup and what type of integration they're using.

I know that the main server has DHCP and proxy availble to the clients, and that I can get a server going with DHCP and PROXY.

That's not the point crizist. The point is if the main server is running active directory (which it most likely is) it will completely kill your server when it doesn't authenticate. Like i've said, the client end of this install will be simple. DHCP and proxy are easy to setup. Making the server integrate with the existing network is the main problem. Based on what you're telling me, you really don't even need a server, you just need a Switch. The main server is already handling DCHP, proxy, and probably user authentication. So why don't you back up, and explain why you are installing a server (school project, personal choice, your work for the schools IT department, etc), why you need a dedicated server for this portion of the LAN rather than just adding another trunked switch to the network, which would require far less configuration.
