I had it working using the nv drivers but had better results downloading the package from NVidia and compiling it.
Basically make sure you apt-get install kernel kernel-headers kernel-dev gcc gcc-c++ automake make-tools then download the package from NV

As long as you install the nvidia binaries it should work fine.

The 8800 series should be OK to get you going in 7.10 but without GLX.. If you want the newest drivers try Envy.
