Compiz Fusion Woes - Overclock.net

Well, with the help and support of OC.N's linux guru's and some hard work and determination to get ubuntu working on my part, I have most of my issues ironed out. One last thing. I can't enable extra effects

whenever I try to move it from "none" I get the message "desktop effects could not be enabled" When I installed ubuntu, I tried doing the whole restricted driver setup for nvidia drivers, but it told me none of my hardware needed it, so I used the envy method for installing my drivers. Any ideas as to why I can't enable effects?

That usually means that your Graphics arent powerful enough to run compiz, but since you have an 8800GT...0_o

Your on ubuntu, right?

Try searching nvidia drivers in add remove programs, you should get 3: Legacy, standard and new.

Try the newest ones (sorry if you've already done this), and see what happens.

Failing that you could have to download the latest linux release off the nvidia website

I can't even get the drivers from nvidias website to install.

I had the biggest pain trying to do the exact same thing.
I finally scrapped the whole idea.
Then after trying to get back into Windows, the Grub nightmare was the cap on the lid.

so it's possibly an 8800 GT thing? Lame considering my IGP 340 integrated chipset on my 6 year old laptop can run compiz without lag at all

Just had a flick through and this may be a decent solution. It sounds like you have to remove the old restricted modules for the nvidia driver and download some package dependancies, then login and install the driver from text mode (so no GUI unfortunately).

I dont know the full details, so best reading the thread.

hah, yeah compiz isnt as demanding as its beauty lets on. as for the 8800GT, make sure you are running the Nvidia proprietary drivers...

Heh, temperamental is Linus' middle name. Then again, when you actually have control of your OS, things can get intense. But this isnt the time to start one of those discussions. or is it?
