Default Entropy: A new Linux Game Project

Visit the website: Oasis-Games.com
Entropy has been in the planning stages and built up an administrative team for the past year, and it's finally time to get out in the open.

Entropy is an open source game project the likes of which you have never seen. With what is currently a small team of modelers, texture artists, and programmers, development on Entropy (which just finished the final stages of design) is starting right now.

We're looking for new team members who show an interest in open source gaming and who have experience in the following fields:

- Game texture design
- 3d modeling
- Programming in OpenGL (in C)
- Web graphics.

Our skilled "core team" has worked on an assortment of other projects in the past, and our programming team (Person, would be more accurate) has experience in multiple areas of game development, from 3d programming and shader design, to networking and web development.

More to the point, Entropy will be something brand new and revolutionary, in both its spirit and style of gameplay. Entropy will be a structured mix of First Person Shooter combat, with vehicles of all sorts, combined with Real Time Strategy, with a few Role Playing elements thrown in. However, the most important aspect of Entropy is that it is entirely online and immersive, almost every character in game will be an actual player.

Entropy takes place far in the future after a terrorist organization (which does not play a role in the actual game) quite literally destroyed the Earth. Mankind has since repopulated the rest of galaxy and broken into two primary forces: the New Light Alliance and the Confederation of Socialist Planets. Both are highly militaristic and have started the First Galactic War, a conflict of such huge proportions it has engulfed every man, woman, and child, dominating virtually all of the efforts of both sides.

Players will find themselves in the role of a ground soldier, or based on their abilities, an officer, on the team of their choosing. The game for a ground soldier is a first person shooter with mixed goals including capturing enemy territory or destroying enemy strongholds. Most all offensive actions will be delegated by players who have achieved the rank of Officer. These players are able to see the game from an RTS standpoint - with the ability to deliver commands to willing players. Officers will also have the chance to enter the fight on their own, but their death will cost their team far more than that of a regular Ground Soldier. Death is an important aspect of Entropy. When a player dies, they are brought to a Repo (which, as many of you should know, stands for repository) where they respawn and can join the fight again.

Another important aspect of Entropy is that every piece of land in the game is available to the player. The game is divided into an assortment of planets, which can be added to by the development team as needed using special tools (developers will only have access to their own servers, and the main servers containing the key planets in the game will be under the control of the Core Team). Space combat and travel will greatly resemble that of Eve. Officers will have the option of piloting ships with small crews of Ground Soldiers to the planets of their choosing. Such options are also available to regular players at their own expense.

More information on the gameplay is available from the main site.

Entropy is just now entering its development phase, and we are looking for volunteers to help out in various different areas. As production begins, source code will be handled by Git. We are looking for volunteers to host a Git server, but we have a possible location already.

Technical Details:
Name: Entropy
Language: C
3d Library: OpenGL
Target OS: Linux
Genre: MMOFPS/RTS/RPG
Development timeframe: 2 years

I wonder if it'll be any good... I can't help with development because I'm not competent in C yet

Oh it will be.
Yeah, we do need some coders, but not everyone has to know how to code.

Are you part of the team?

I don't think I'd be able to help with anything, honestly. I suck at art, I suck at coding. I'm ok with Google Sketchup, though lol

Maybe I can make a video ad

Why yes, yes I am. I'm one of the modelers, I wouldn't call myself lead, but I'm pretty adept at it. If there was such a thing, I'd probably be 'Co-Leader' or something along those lines.

Hrm, a video ad, eh? I'll keep that in mind.

I'm in a graphics class now where we're using OpenGL and C++. Its fun and a PIA at the same time. I'll stick to OSes and Networking and socket programming.

Why is that so funny?

Here's one of his older examples, but this was on when he was using C# and XNA, the shaders still carry over, so the work is still the same.

This was done on a GeForce 5200 FX, so it's hardly graphically intensive.

(The level Bloodgulch from Halo is just a placeholder to test out the engine.)
