Question Wise to switch to Ubuntu?

I've been running Vista Ultimate for like 6 months now. Its good, gets the job done, no real problems. I just really want to switch to Ubuntu because I installed it on my old laptop and love it now. But I'm just concerned if its a smart thing to do since, i use a usb wireless adapter (Ive heard theres problems with usb ones), I use Photoshop and a lot of Adobe software on a regular basis. And I also like to play BF2 and WoW every once in a while and I dont know if you can on ubuntu so, I need a suggestion. Stay with Vista or swap for Ubuntu?

Thanks.

You might have a tough time to get USB wireless adapters to work. Adobe software is probably going to be a no-go.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

you don't even need to dual boot anymore, use wubi and install/uninstall ubuntu like any other application.

Scarz, Ubuntu is a fantastic alternative! however, i've tried running BF2 on linux before and it worked, however it was VERY buggy. so buggy that the top half of the screen was black...other than that it worked fine. WoW - ive heard it works fine with linux, note that you might get a few less fps, but nonetheless, it should run just fine - to my knowledge.

the wireless usb problem IS a big problem, however i have yet to have any troubles with my wireless usb adapter when used with Ubuntu (linksys wusb54gc) - even on the livecd boot up, the adapter was recognized, as well as my network. the connection wasnt a hassle at all, just put my password in, and it kicked in.

as for the photoshop issue, linux has some great photoshop-like programs.

my vote is FOR switching to Ubuntu, but that is coming from a linux enthusiast. However, if you choose not to scrap vista, you could always dual boot. dual booting is awesome if you are just a casual gamer you can just switch over to windows to play your games, then switch back to linux when you are done.

Good luck with your choice! hope ive helped!

Cheers,
- Flatliner

I run Ubuntu 7.10 on my laptop and love it, but I'd be wary of using a USB adapter for Wireless, and you'll have to find open-source alternatives to Adobe products.

Adobe is currently making there stuff for Linux. Or so I've heard. It'll probably be awhile though. I'd give the USB a 25% chance of just working and about a 35% chance of it working after tweaking. WoW works fine and I haven't played BF2 on it.

And you said you have 15 Gigs or space left. That's plenty for Ubuntu.

But yes, overall, people need to look at this from the perspective of a business and not of an enthusiast. I look at many of these posts and say to my self, "And that type of thinking is exactly why you're not running the business..." lol

i ran ubuntu for a while, its really cool and quite user friendly. as for games, some games would work through a windows emulator like wine along with alot of other programs, im not sure if bf2 is one of them. its a good o/s and worth a try IMO
