Kinda funny how there are much better community driven resources for fglrx than there are for the nvidia binary, seeing as how the nvidia drivers are "so much better" than the ATI ones. Always found that peculiar. I guess all those years of craptacular Linux support under ATI really paid off at the end .

Anyways, threads like these should really be stickies. I already made a few similar threads for the ATI drivers and they get very little hits. As for guides, you may want to stick in the bug tracker for fglrx and Phoronix, just as off hand help resources.

You need to include ENVY
It'll get the nVidia and ATI drivers for you.

can't you just use the restricted drivers app under admin?? My Nvidia card was recognized right away and drivers were downloaded and installed using the restricted drivers app..also installed the broadcom drivers as well. This is in Hardy.

For the most part, yes. But as new cards are rleased and newer drivers to support them, users often need to manually install the latests binaries, and most distros (Ubuntu included) rarely update the video drivers in their repositories.

Plus you can't get compiz-fusion working at full speed on restricted drivers.

Right now the drivers on the Ubuntu repos are the latest officially released drivers, so support is pretty much the best you're going to get. Once the next round of drivers come out (the next fglrx should come out in a week or so, and the next nvidia binary sometime this month) using the restricted manager may not be the best option (due to them not upgrading the version in the repos).

Hmm, Compiz would only allow me to turn on the medium setting until I installed the drivers for my 8800GT with envy.
