Keep at it. I've gotten multiple installs up and running, but usually chicken out because I don't like having to manually mount my ntfs partitions, as I have quite a few of them. One day I'll get to work and figure out how to get them to auto-mount, but until then I'll stick with Fedora, which auto-mounts my partitions for me.

Arch is MUCH easier to get running when you have two PCs right next to each other, one to install Arch on, and one to browse the wiki, and if absolutely necessary talk to people on the Arch IRC channel, or post on the forums. I have an old Sony Vaio next to my sig rig, I use it to test distros, I've gone through a few Arch installs on it, but I usually reformat to test distros on it. The latest test was Sabayon 4, which was pretty cool, I'm going to start recommending it to friends over Ubuntu, because it will detect your videocard upon first boot and install drivers for you, and you have compiz out of the box, plus all needed codecs, and even a few games right out of the box.

Agreed with the first part.

It took me around 15 tries to finally get my first one with a GUI. Man was I proud! Now I can get one to the GUI point in 6 or 7 hours.

Agreed. Although if your NIC works out of box, you can just use Links to text browse the wiki (that's what I always do. )

Which one of these does Ubuntu not do? Ubuntu was even able to detect my old AGP Voodoo card and get drivers for it.

Compiz isn't enabled out of the box on Ubuntu, and media codecs are not installed.

May not seem like a big deal to you, but my friend's aren't the tech-saavy types who think it should take an hour or two of config tweaking to have a spinning cube for a desktop. They're lazy.

Windows doesn't come with a spinning box out the box either. Neither does it come with codecs pre-installed.

Compiz is enabled, just not the box. Most of the other effects are enabled though

As said Compiz is enabled. And for codecs
Code:
sudo apt-get vlc
Problem solved.

Flash too.

I realize it's only two apt-get commands, but still, like I said it's just what I recommend to lazy friends who want to give Linux a quick spin on the live-cd. Something to impress them. The default Sabayon theme is a bit cooler than the Ubuntu theme as well.

I'm not saying Sabayon is better, I'm saying tell someone who has never tried Linux to pop in the Sabayon live-cd and the Ubuntu live-cd and see which they like more. I'm guessing that will be Sabayon, because it contains everything I've said above right off the live-cd.

Ubuntu is sponsored by a corporation that supports FOSS and it can't include MP3 and other such codecs without a license. I don't know anything about Sabayon though.
