If the GUI controls aren't working for you, you can try this.

Open a terminal (Apps -> Accessories -> Terminal)

And type in
Code:
alsamixer
And see if you can change the sound that way. (ProTip: The "MM" means that channel has been muted.)

well i finally have a steady diet of linux running. i dont see the option to add myself to the google doc any help?
