Linux Mint has good results with gaming don't know about recording though.

2nd recommendation: Ubuntu not because its easier but because its package manager owns. Linux isn't all that great for recording sound hate to say it. unless you configure your alsa driver correctly that is. and that's no easy task.

For sound recording, you'll have to learn about the Jack Audio Server. It's actually really awesome, because you can synchronize between applications. For example, you can easily set up a drum pattern in Hydrogen, and record your guitar in Ardour without having to export to .wav and import to a new track, etc. Here's a quick tutorial on synchronizing Ardour with Hydrogen: http://www.ubustu.com/globe/2007/09/...n-with-ardour/ As for the distribution, I'd say get Ubuntu for the ease of use, and upgrade to Ubuntu Studio through the package manager.

Doesn't a game have to be compatible with OpenGL to work in WINE?

No, although it usually should be OGL to work natively (which apparently isn't a word in the English dictionary...)
