Default Help installing XFi sound card drivers

I just installed Mepis 7.0 on my computer this past weekend, and everything works fine except for my sound card. I downloaded the XFi drivers from creatives website but cannot seem to be able to compile them into a working install. is there anyone that has done this that can give me a step by step?

There are several threads on this already. Short answer: Don't bother installing them. OSS4 has basic support for the card already. You could try the pre-packaged .deb that's floating around and see if it works:

I've seen that information but for some reason it keeps telling me that build-essential is necessary and I cannot figure out how to get build-essential to install. Im an extreme noob at Linux I know my way around I just don't know where stuff needs to go or alot of commands.

I tried to use the OSS drivers that came with Mepis 7.0 and I got the message "device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)." Why isn't it there?

You need OSS4. I don't know of any recent distro that has that revision installed by default. Build-essential should be available from your distro's package manager.
