Alright, I know for a fact, my questions are going to seem REALLY noobish to some of you linux gurus here. But please bare with me. I really want to learn linux, but I don't want to do any terminal stuff. Hence why I chose Ubuntu 8.04
.Anyways, so far I'm running into a few small problems I'm sure you guys can sort out REAL quick for me. If possible, please try to keep things to the graphical interface only....and dummy terms if you will! 1: I accidentally interupted my first set of "updates". And now I have a stop sign looking thing in the upper right corner. I try to install the updates again and it says: Quote:
2: I cannot for the LIFE OF ME see my Windows Shares from my file server (running 2003 server edition). I can see the computer...but I cannot get my "Monster Drive" share to open for me. Its got all my music and stuff there. Help would be greatly appreciated there as well. I've tried logging in with different user names / passwords to the server...nothing that I've tried thus far has worked. All in all, I do like the look and feel of Ubuntu. So far its just those two things causing me headaches though. I'd LOVE to be able to listen to my music while in my OS. That'd be nice....hence the network share . And updates would probably help keep it safe and whatnot. So that'd be kinda nice to get sorted out as well.So far though...I have the nvidia drivers installed (I think), and I have Compiz Fusion? I think that's what its called. I drag the windows around and it looks really cool and wiggles .So anyway...help? EDIT: READ THIS FIRST!!! I got the update situation sorted out. Now my only problem is connecting to my Windows 2003 server box. It will not see my shares no matter what! I'm sure its a security policy on the server causing the problems. But I don't remember where or what setting it was I changed last time I ran linux! Anybody have any ideas? New question...and updating first post: Is there anyway to put a little more "eye candy" to ubuntu? I've already got compiz going and that's AWESOME....but was just wondering if there's any sort of "glassy" effects like in Vista.

can i ask why you are shying away from the terminal? that is where all the power of linux is. you can't expect to become a pro overnight, but it helps to use the terminal as you go along, and you will pick it up faster than you think.
are you still unable to see your windows shares?

And no, I still cannot see any Windows Shares. I can't remember how I got it working last time I used Ubuntu. It MIGHT be a server side issue. I'm running a DNS server and all that junk (never use it now though)....so I have to use a login to get anywhere on the server. Also...another issue just came up: I can no longer use my mouse wheel for some odd reason in firefox??? I'll try a restart of firefox to see if that solves the issue there. EDIT: Nope...no more mouse wheel for some odd reason???? It was working fine a few minutes ago though. EDIT 2: Alright a restart of Ubuntu fixed my mouse woes. But still no access to my Windows shares . I even turned on the "guest" account on my server...which usually allows pretty much anybody to log onto the shares. Nope..nothing.

well aside from making sure all the permissions are right for your shares i'm not sure what else to say. i know when i first installed ubunut 8.04 on my desktop i was unable to see my shares from my server (windows) also, and then a few days later they were there. i honestly have no idea what fixed it haha.
how are you trying to connect to the server? are you going to places>network or places>connect to server?

I've tried both. Neither one works. I can SEE the server listed, and all of my other windows machines. But I cannot for the LIFE of me access anything. I click on one, and it just sits there and does nothing.
Maybe a workgroup issue perhaps? That might just be a Windows thing, I don't know. But maybe I'm in the wrong workgroup?

linux should be able to see the shares no matter the work group. but you can change the samba settings to act like it is in a certain work group. you can try that, search around for a file called smb.conf (i think) and open that up and edit the workgroup section.

The Windows Shares is a weird issue. I automatically see all my shared folders in Ubuntu, I didn't have to set anything up.
