Default Ubuntu 8.04 x64 install issue

Hi there, i'd thought i'd give linux a go so I decided to download Ubuntu. Now, everything goes fine until I ask it to either install or run the live CD. The loading screen appears, but when the loading has completed, the screen just goes blank and doesn't do anything else (I've left it for about 4 hours once).

I have heard it may be something to do with my 8800GTX?

Any help would be cool.

Thanks

There is an alternate-install CD. The installation process is text based, yet very easy to understand. Try it.

You could try hitting Ctrl Alt Backspace, which resets the X.org terminal/server.

Have you tried hitting Ctrl Alt Fx buttons? They switch between screens.

Also could be that you possible don't have any of the driver modules for the 8800GTX cards.

I can't exactly remember what you have to press to get to it, but you can edit the boot options to disable the graphics and see the error messages. You just need to remove 'quiet' and 'splash'. Then post the errors here.

I also suggest you check if your bios is the latest version as that may have an effect on it. When I got my m2a-vm with 6 month old bios, I couldn't get any distro to install. After updating everything worked just fine.

Edit one of the boot options by deleting "splash", and adding "irqpoll" instead. Worked for me.

Well I did manage to get it installing using the text based installer. However, it totally screwed up my RAID array even though i installed it to a completley different hard drive. I won't be trying this again.
