Default Random Crashes / Restarts

So I will be doing my thing, the all of a sudden something locks up and my computer just restarts. Sometimes everything will freeze, and I can move my mouse over stuff and it moves / gets green / black lines over top of it but when I click my mouse or touch a key on my keyboard my comp restarts. This is now happening from ever 30 mins to ever 4 ish hours.

It is hard to describe, so I am wondering if there is an error log or something that would help you guys out.

I am having no problems on Vista.

I have no visual effects turned on and I am in Hardy.

EDIT: !@$#!@$ it just happened again. That is 3 times in the last 20 mins.

I don't see event viewer anywhere under the System tab at the top taskbar.

Ok, go into your Administrator tab and look for System log. Search around until you find something fishy. I'm not on my Ubuntu right now, so I can't give you the exact place to look, but look around for the times that the computer is running and when it shuts down, you'll see information if it is Ubuntu's fault. Look carefullly!

Probably because he's not in Windows...

Deth,

Have you installed any packages that are outside of the Ubuntu repositories? If so, what?

If not, then what are the last packages you have installed from the official repos?

Sounds to me like you've got some sort of error with a package that was broken when you installed it, or a working package that broke other packages. This sometimes happens when you are dealing with a distro like Ubuntu with many thousands of packages and many different packagers.

You can enter a terminal and type:

dmesg

But this will only work if you still can access the terminal during or directly after a freeze or crash. It won't be of any use after a reboot.

Alternatively, you can use something like ksymoops. Check and see if it's in the ubuntu repositories. If so, download it and configure it and it can help you debug the crash after a reboot.

The vast majority of "oops" crashes or kernel panics are a result of hardware failures or glitches. It is rare to see a complete system crash due to software issues. Usually, if it is a software problem, then your system will be recoverable and wont force a hard reboot. Sometimes I will have KDE crash on me, but I've yet to see Linux itself completely crash on the current machine I use.

Also, it is possible to have a hardware issue that vexes Linux but wont appear in Windows, and vice versa. If you aren't able to debug the crash, then I would try and run Memtest for 8-10 hours and see if it passes error free.
