Default Ubuntu + ATI drivers + CS1.6

so ive managed to make all these work great together. My issue is when i start counter-strike 1.6 i get 100fps. but i also get random crashes. when my system crashes.. i have to press the reboot button on my computer. anyone have a fix for this? ive tried google and wine/ubuntu forums. i cant find a solution.. maybe someone here can help me.

Wine eats up a big chunk of performance; only a few games (usually openGL based) suffer from very little problems. Additionally, Wine does not like ATI drivers (this is due to "incomplete" openGL code on fglrx). You're lucky that it even runs. As I said, your best bet is to play with Wine's registry and see if anything improves. The most simple solution is to ditch Wine and not use it for 3D games. Yeah, I know, it's a ****ty solution, but if you'r dead set in playing Windows games, well, run Windows.

acually... i had cs1.6 and wine working flawlessly for hours at a time... then i changed the resolution and it froze. not a hard freeze though. i closed cs1.6 through system->Aministration->System Monitor. then i went to the process tab and terminated hl.exe... after that, every time i started cs again it was in window mode and loaded slowly. so i rebooted ubuntu again and now i have this problem...

Even now, I get 100fps capped. It runs smoothly with sound.. then gets a random hard crash.

editttt. sometimes its 5 minutes into a game... and upto 15-25 minutes in a game.

What Windows version are you playing at? XP? 98? Windows 98 seems to be the best for compatibility. Resolution is also a problem for most 3D titles; you either have to play in a window or use low resolutions (try 800x600 or 1024x768). Also, sound; try using OSS, or maybe setting it to driver emulation. All this changes should be done in winecfg by the way.

I used Windows 98 on hl.exe. For steam, I used Windows XP. I never tried a lower resolution because when I got CS working flawlessly.. I changed the resolution and it crapped out on me. I've used alsa for sound because OSS gives me no sound. I also set it to driver emulation already. Ive tried Emulation, basic, standard, and full on hardware acceleration.

I will try a lower resolution.. maybe 800x600

okay so.. that was FAIL. I did a totally fresh install of Ubuntu again. I installed the ATI Drivers. and is working in conjunction with Ubuntu(Hardy). I just cant get CS1.6 to run without randomly crashing. I still get 100fps.

EDIT

im going to try and load steam without any sound drivers through winecfg. then once steam loads, I will go into winecfg again and check OSS under the Audio Tab. Then load CS.

Will post back within acouple of hours, if this works.. because I want to play CS!!!

If not.. I will update this within 20 mins
