So I'm trying to install Ubuntu on my new rig because I can't buy Vista until about 2 months from now... and it'll get past the 'Ubuntu' loading screen with the orange bar, but then it just pops up with something like 'ubuntu$:' and just sits there.
__________________What am I doing wrong? =/ Oh and the rig that I'm trying to install it on is not my default rig. It's the one titled 'new build'. EDIT: I was using the Live CD if that matters. Hmm. Maybe it was a bad burn or something? I'll try burning it again and try it tomorrow when I wake up.

When you get 'ubuntu$:' follow the steps:
1. Type 'sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf', this will open a console text editor. 2. Find the graphics section, there is a line called 'Driver' with the value 'nv' (I think). Change 'nv' to 'vesa'. Press ctrl+o (to save) and ctrl+x (to exit). 3. Type 'startx'. This should start the desktop environment.

When you get to the LiveCD menu, choose Safe Graphics (press F4). Also, press F6 so you get to the boot parameter line and delete quiet splash -- so you can see any errors that you may get.

Your best bet is to check here http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php That is really weird though. I installed Ubuntu on an almost identical system just fine.

I made a new Ubuntu disk, but I'm still having the same problem.

X is not loading, which leads me to believe that Ubuntu is not recognizing your card. Try booting with "Safe Graphics" since that will force load vesa (the generic display driver). You should be able to start a normal GNOME live session then. Install and when you have everything set up, install the graphics drivers for your card.

Thanks everyone! I got it working using the safe graphics. +REP to everyone above.
__________________But now I'm stuck on partitioning. My HD isn't showing up. It's actually been really finicky. I have to boot twice to get it to show up in BIOS, but even then, it won't show up in the Ubuntu installer. EDIT: I just hooked in a new SATA cable and SATA power cord. I noticed that it detected the HD on first boot, so that's a good sign.. EDITTT: Nope, still nothing.

So even the BIOS has problems detecting the drive? That's a hardware problem then. Do you have a spare SATA port on your mobo to try?

Well the BIOS seems to be detecting the drive now, but Ubuntu still doesn't see it.
