Hey everyone, my father is starting to use Redhat on his desktop computer and I would be tempted to try Linux as a dual boot with Windows Vista. I was wondering though, are there major differences between all these different versions of Linux? (Redhat, Ubuntu...), do they have different kernels etc... and for instance, would a Ubuntu user be able to fully use Redhat with his knowledge of Ubuntu?
Thanks! EDIT: and one other question, since Linux won't be my main operating system, what partition size should I allocate for it? Like 20GB?

They are somewhat similar when it comes to commands and overall layout of the OS. I think the main difference though, is the package managing that each of them have. I believe that someone with knowledge of Ubuntu may struggle a bit at first with RedHat, but with the basic knowledge of Linux, it shouldn't be that big of a deal at all. Can I also recommend you try openSUSE?

I second that vote. By far the easiest Distro to get into and use, and very nice to use as well. If you don't want to mess with partitions, you can try it via either a live CD, or by downloading VMware and running it as a virtual machine. Then after trying it you can decide it you want to add a partition for it. Ohh and make sure to grab either KDE 3 or KDE 4 for it.

I'll give a look at OpenSuse
![]() And if there is any, is there something like the "most complete version of Linux", because I don't really care about difficulty, I would rather start with the hardest one so then after I have no problem using other versions. VMWare is interresting, my dad is going to use it so I'll definitly give a look into that.

If you want the hardest, go straight to slackware, but I wouldn't recommend it

It's not. It's only for advance users, or people who like pain. I haven't even messed with it. Nor do I think I will anytime soon. openSUSE does everything I need.

I'll follow your word on that lol! I'll check OpenSuse and Redhat. I might start using either one in a week.

Stick with windows. It's the best OS, remember? No games on Linux, right?
All joking aside, since you probably won't be doing much on it, 10GB will probably be enough for a partition. Start with Ubuntu, Suse, or PC-Linux-OS.
