VMware is faster, as it can use SMP. VirtuaBox is much lighter and it's open source too.

I've compared VMware, Virtual PC, and Virtual Box. VMware is the fastest of the three, even without SMP. However, VMware is also fairly heavy, as mkdir says.
__________________Neither VMware or Virtual Box are very good for DOS gaming. Virtual PC is probably the best option for DOS and non-NT based versions of Windows. However, I don't think Virtual PC can run on anything besides a Windows host. For the newest versions of Windows, both VMware and VirtualBox seem quite usable. I personally use VMware and Mircosoft Virtual PC. VMware is fast, and Virtual PC can play almost all of my DOS games without a hitch (I can even get CD audio working).

VMware Workstation costs more than a copy of Windows.

I was thinking the same thing
. Why not just use the free version of VMWare? For most people, there is no need to pay money for VMWare.

Isn't VMWare Workstation free to use if you register with VMWare?
__________________I've used VirtualBox and VMWare. If you're running on Ubuntu I would use VirtualBox due to the simplicity of installing it. However I use VMWare most of the time. Mostly because I use it at work though and it is the de facto standard for the most part in the industry.
