Default Just Started Ubuntu do i need Anti Virus and Firewall

Like windows do i need anti virus and firewall
like Avast! or Zone Alarm

can i use windows live messenger
and skype?

You dont really need an Anti-Virus for Ubuntu or Firewall. But for msn you can use aMSN which is a Linux flavour of MSN and you can use Ekiga Softphone instead of Skype

i also have an other problem every time i switch user, tho i don't have a second user, i cant get to the pain screen, its just stays back, but the GPU does not stop sending a signal to the monitor as the monitor signal is always green, and the black is not a monitor off black
but its like a black with brightness if u know what i mean.

Try pressing Ctrl-Alt-F7 it will restart the X server

The switching user problem is a bug with the graphics drivers, if it's that HD3870 you're using. The fglrx devs. claim to have fixed the issue with the latest drivers, but some users still suffer from it. What driver version are you using?
