its alot of fun - and very easy to install. I personally liked it, but i dunno if it is faster than Xp. Its still one of the best versions of Linux out there

its hard to say if its "Faster" or not, but it is less resource intensive. linux is usually the OS of choice on older machines. that pent 2 would be a great candidate for ubuntu, have fun!

Look for Ubuntu Studio. Very fun, many utilities, and looks pimp.

I doubt there will be much joy using gnome on a p2. Consider at least xfce. Best of all is to use a wm, of course. Also ubuntu needs a little tuning to work nicely on such a slow machine. Disable all the services that are not required in first place.

A 1.3GHz CPU it's not just a lot faster than a p2, but has also a better core architecture and more features. Also nobody was even dreaming about 768MB RAM on such a PC. On my old K6-2 I was using Openbox (i still use it) for a comfortable work.

i agree with mkdir, you should try xubuntu instead. that way you wont need to worry as much about how fast it will be, XFCE will be a lot easier on your system than gnome.
or you could even try something different...like slackware! ![]()
