Default Fedora input problem

I have no idea how long this has been going on, because I so rarely actually login to the console of my linux box. However, today I had to move some image files around and it was simply easier to do it locally. I have an older install of Fedora (Core 4) and running KDE. It seems that every few seconds I lose the ability to input anything; both the keyboard and the mouse stop working. Some of the keystrokes seem to capture but just take a few seconds to come through. Obviously this makes things a little tricky. It seems to be about 15 seconds and lasts about 5 seconds, but I didn't try and time anything well enough to see if it was consistant. Is anybody familiar with this issue?

That's weird... I don't know where to start for diagnosing a problem with that.

How old is the computer?

It is a shuttle xpc that is about 4 or 5 years old. I beleive it has 2GB ram and an opty 150. The rest of the server seems to be just fine, only the input process is messed up. I suppose I could try restarting it, but I don't like shutting down that particular box.
