Hey guys. So, I recently installed Xubuntu to mess around with on my Vostro lappy. I tried using Envy, and got nothing but errors, so I thought, "Hey, let's download the nvidia drivers straight from the site, and try to set it up on my own." Bad idea. So I ran through their installer. Went into a virtual console, killed the X-Server, blah blah. Upon installation I rebooted, and to my dismay, I cannot boot into Xubuntu anymore. All I get is a black screen, with some BusyBox v1.1.3 message and a '(initramfs)' prompt. Not sure what to do. Did I mess up the X Server? That's likely the case. I somewhat know my way around linux, but have never seen this before. Thanks in advance for any help guys.

You probably have to reconfigure X. Did you backup your xorg.conf file?

Are you sure the nvidia driver installed ok? If so you can try running nvidia-xconfig.

I went ahead and reinstalled xubuntu. No big deal. And for the record, I did backup the xorg.conf file. I just didn't know what to do with it from that prompt. I got it working ok this time around though. Not sure what happened last time...never seen that before. Thanks for the help guys.

To backup, just copy it to a different file (eg: sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf2)
To restore, just copy xorg.conf2 back to xorg.conf.

. But really, both driver sets are great once you get them working. The problem is that they are binary blobs, and will cause instability and other issues at least 50% of the time. I have been playing with the open source Intel and ATI drivers... one word: stable. Sure, they're slow as snails (the ATI driver is about 50% slower than the proprietary one), but they are still surprisingly good even in 3D environments. No crashes and/or system errors either. Once you have them configured (not that hard, since all the neccessary documentation is freely available) you can pretty much enjoy a hassle free 3D/2D experience. I can now see why all the Linux guys are very pushy about open source drivers. Compared to FOSS drivers, the binary blobs from ATI and nvidia are a joke when it comes to system integration and stability. Edit: Just to show you how bad these drivers can be. I tried installing fglrx on a spare rig I made and it completely hosed my mesa tree. It corrupted some key libs, and it was a pain restoring them. I just said "f' it" and reinstalled Xubuntu.
