I'm stuck on this part. Everything in the config file is fine, and I go on and it asks me to chose where to install GRUB. I read at ArchWiki that if I want to dual boot, I should install it in my boot. So I chose "/dev/sda1" which is my 18gb Arch Linux partition. Then it says "enter the full path to your root device". I'm not exactly sure what to input here, so I put "/dev/sda1" just like where it asked me to install. That's probably wrong, because it said "Error installing GRUB. (see /dev/tty5 for output).
What am I doing wrong? Here are the options it gives me for where to install grub: /dev/sda /dev/sda1 - Arch partition /dev/sda2 - swap /dev/sda3 - XP NTFS partitoin /dev/sda4 - FAT32 Media partition I also tried just putting "/dev/sda" for the root but that didn't work either.

What did it say on tty5?
You can install grub to the MBR, it should be one of the options.

And I don't know what it said in tty5. I don't quite know how to look at that. It said how to somewhere in ArchWiki, but I don't remember. ![]()

You can press Alt+F5 to go to tty5 and then to get back to the install(tty1) press Alt+F1.
EDIT: The MBR should be your first option it appears. The /dev/sda.

When I tried putting /dev/sda1 (18gb Arch ext3 partition) as my boot, and /dev/sda as my root, I see this in tty5:
grub> root (hd0) Filesystem type unknown, using whole disk grub> setup (hd0,0) Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition grub< quit

In case you missed the edit I my above post. /dev/sda would be the MBR. So try installing it to /dev/sda instead on /dev/sda1.

In the config file it says my root is (hd0,0) So I tried to do /dev/sda for boot and (hd0,0) for root, that didn't work. I also tried doing /dev/sda for boot and /dev/sda for root, nothing.

Didn't read your last post fully. You said to put /dev/sda for the boot, and /dev/sda1 for root.
That didn't work. Why is this so difficult for me? I heard Arch Install is pretty easy for most, and up until now it hasn't been that bad. Stupid GRUB. Edit: I exited out of the ArchLive install and went to "Tools" on the Live CD. It had an option to install GRUB to MBR (hd0). I got this error message: Booting 'Install GRUB to hd0 MBR' root (hd0,0) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 setup (hd0) Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no Error 15: File not found Press any key to continue...

When is it asking for this root.
When you go to install a boot loader you select grub and then it dumps you into an editor. Usually the default will work for now. Then is should take you to a screen like the one attached and after you select /dev/sda then it ask if you have a raid, and then it should install grub. I just ran a test in vmware and after selecting /dev/sda I didn't have to enter anything else. That was with the newest release 'Overlord'.

I'm thinking something may be wrong with my live cd. I'm going to try to install GRUB off of an Ubuntu liveCD.
