I must say, i'm pleasantly suprised. This s a very nice operating system compared to what i was expecting. Now i just need to get my desktop looking nice. And i have no idea how to do so. HALP!

I installed Linux Mint on my laptop a few days ago but haven't messed with it much yet. What exactly are you trying to change?

I would suggest getting compiz installed. That will do all the crazy effects that you see everyone showing off. There is a guide in the Linux Mint forums for installing compiz if I remember correctly.

go to gnome-look.com for some good themes, and play around with the panel settings. I'm using mint on my laptop, it's a pretty solid OS. Probably going back to Vista eventually, but it's a refreshing change. =D

the commands dont work? or terminal doesnt work. You may have to run the commands as root. Try putting sudo <command>, where <command> is whatever you're trying to do. Then type your password when it prompts.

Most stuff can be obtained by way of Synaptic (just add the necessary repositories). You can get stuff on your own from the web, in which case you should try getting it in a pre-packaged .deb file, so as to make things easier (just save them to your PC, right click on them, and it gives you the option to install). Many other programs only come as source downloads, and to run those you will need to mess around in the terminal (they usually come with a readme that tells you what to do).
