Default Commands at boot in Xubuntu

So hopefully this will be my last thread on Xubuntu for a while, as this is the last thing that's bothering me that won't work. I need help running a couple commands at startup. It was easy in openSUSE as I just added them to boot.local, but I'm having trouble here.

I made my own script, called myscript.sh. I think copied it to /etc/init.d with the sudo cp command, and then made it executable with chmod +x. I then updated rc.d with the script running defaults. After doing all of these things (which is what i THOUGHT was supposed to be done,) the commands aren't being carried out.

I just want to run the compiz --replace and emerald --replace at boot so I don't have to do it every time. Thanks in advance for any help. Hopefully I can get this solved so I can stop asking questions .

Try looking around in your home folder. There are a bunch of hidden folders there, and I think there are some startup folders there. If the startup/"Autostart" folder isn't in ~, then maybe it's in ~/<.DE folder>, where <.DE folder> corresponds to whatever DE you're using (maybe it's .kde, .gnome, whatever).

I know it's in there somewhere; I just can't remember exactly where. Snoop around and you'll find it.

I can't find what you're talking about anywhere. There's hardly anything at all in my .kde folder. I'm not sure what to do here. I followed the directions for the init.d folder, and just can't seem to get anything to work. This shouldn't be difficult, I'm just missing something dumb. Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on the situation.

init.d is not the place where you would put the script. Thats for things before X starts, compiz related things are after. I don't use xfce myself but it seems that you need to put the script in ~/.config/autostart. More info can be found here.

That's what I needed. Thanks! It's a shame that it starts kinda slow though, a little annoying, but I'll live.

You could simply add those commands to your Autostart Applications (I think that's what it's called) list. It should be somewhere in the control panel thing. Just make a new entry with the commands you want, and they will be executed upon start-up.

I guess apparently it was in that ~/.config folder. See, I told you it was in one of those hidden folders lol

I assume you already know how to search hidden folders, be it in the GUI or Terminal, then.

Yes, I do (ls -a or ctrl+h for those of you who don't). I found it, it's in .config in my home folder, you were right. What else is new. You may not know the exact answer, but you always point me in the right direction . It turns out though, that it can be changed through the GUI. There is an autostart program section in the settings manager that one can add custom commands to. Seems there's always an easier way to do things than I originally thought.

That's because things can depend on the distro, the DE, etc... Plus, I haven't used Linux as my main/semi-main OS for a while, so some things I only vaguely remember lol

Glad it all works out in the end, though.
