Already tried Ubuntu. Liked it, but it's too easy and takes away from the learning experience.
I want a Distro that uses the command prompt a lot, but then again doesn't completely leave the user in the dark. Arch seemed perfect for me, but no matter what I do GRUB will not boot up ArchLinux on my computer. I have no idea why and no one can seem to figure it out. Edit: Try to include some reasons as to why you suggested that specific distro. Don't just say "Debian."

if you don't use the installer, the installation is completely command-line based and pretty well documented.

Installation is one thing that I'll make an exception for. A GUI installer wouldn't hurt.
Arch has a GUI installer but requires you to set up stuff yourself, and I think that is what is causing me problems.

Gentoo has a GUI installer, but I don't know how well it works. I've always just installed it using the command line and a live CD.

Fedora Core is alright although I haven't messed with it recently, it was pretty straight forward to setup and get running. What exactly are you going to be doing with your os?

I learned on Fedora Core 6....try Fedora. It's best when you know at least a little bit of bash, but once you learn Fedora is pretty nice.

Bash isn't too hard to learn, I learned about linux with Debian and experimented with Fedora, took me a minute to figure it out. But after working in a Red Hat environment in college I really had no choice but to learn different shells, although putty was my friend(never used Red Hat before, remote session into the colleges mainframe ftw!).

I heard slackware is very challenging, and Debian is easy cake.
Something in between would be perfect. ![]()
