Ubuntu, OpenSuse, and Fedora, are good distros to start off with. And yes, Wine technically allows you to play 3D Windows games on Linux, but you're better off using it for pure 2D and other non-accelerated programs, and use native applications for your 3D fix.

Ubuntu, PcLinuxOS, openSuse.
Those are the noob distros, with Debian somewhat in there.

hhaha, noob friendly indeed.
Good thing about ubuntu is you get to choose your style, not only by configuring compiz and any other eyecandy. You get to choose between Gnome and KDE.

The only thing with Ubuntu is that it's gotten to a point where it is almost completely plug and play. Hell, it even recognized my wireless card during the install and set it up (and it's one of those obnoxious windows only ones, how I hate ndiswrapper). So as a way of learning linux it's a good basic introduction, but offers little incentive to go too much further into it.
I would go with it until you get the basics down then start trying out some others like debian (which is ubuntu's base) and gentoo. And eventually work your way to slackware.

Ubuntu/Mint, OpenSuse, PCLOS. Fedora is actually kinda harder... I don't really consider it an "easy" distro.
I don't find much performance increase in 64-bit, so I say it's just better to stick to 32-bit for compatibility. Unless you want to do SMP folding.
