I sincerely doubt that a power outage would change a password, it might have corrputed something if it got zapped, or just got damaged when it was shut down improperly...

if the linux machine didnt have file sharing setup and you cant get in due to a password, take the harddrive out, put it in a different rig as a slave drive, and grab the files that way...

ok, so slap it in to a other rig and drag and drop the important files that she needs correct?

  1. Hit the Ctrl key at the GRUB menu to stop the counter, then hit 'e' to edit the boot entry.
  2. Arrow up or down to the line that starts with "kernel", and then hit 'e' again.
  3. At the end of the command line type a space and then the number 1. Press Enter. Then press 'b'.
  4. You should get a root command prompt without having to type in a password.

This obviously won't help much if the reason she can't log in is because the hard drive is dying and corrupted some files. But I should mention how you can reset the password:

Code:
mount -o remount,rw /
passwd <username>
(First you will have to enable write access to the drive, then you can change the user's password.)

In what context? If you just logged in normally and everything was working you could just select Terminal out of the menus.
