In regard to the motherboard section: how about Biostar? I see a lot of posts online and in newegg reviews that Biostar gives major pains when trying to install Linux on one. The same goes for Foxconn. Wasn't there an issue with Foxconn (something with the BIOS)? Perhaps Foxconn fixed the issue as they said they would? Just wondering.

Are you referring to particular motherboards? I'll note something if it's brought to my attention.

When it comes to stuff like motherboards it really depends on the chipset being used and nothing else. If a particular chip is supported, then all the motherboards with that chip *will* work. Now, some vendors have the nasty habit of doing unconventional stuff like temp. sensor placement, so you may encounter some problems when using things like lm-sensors. Another thing that can give you problems is the particular BIOS revisions different vendors may use; the BIOS may have bugs that are not particularly harmful on a Windows environment but that may be troublesome on Linux machines. Still, as long as the kernel supports the chip it is all good.

A note on processors;
Linux will support pretty much every CPU out there today, including the MIPS, SPARC, CELL and IA64 chips (Itanium).

...just in case you have a special project...

See what I mean? If you choose Linux out of their download selection page, then you can get to it. But the direct link just doesn't work.

How is ATI support these days?

My new Core i7 hardware is getting delivered on Monday and Tuesday when the fun of going back to Linux (finally) begins. I will be using my existing HD3870 for about a month while I recover financially. The plan is to switch to NVIDIA cards next month.

Good-Very Good, depending on what you do with your hardware. It's in no way perfect by any means.

So long as I can get EVE Online in WINE working, that's all I care about. I don't play any other games at the moment but quite addicted to EVE. Worse case, I can dual boot until I switch to NVIDIA cards next month.

May want to check on the compatibility of WINE + fglrx + EVE. WINE works "good" with ATI drivers, but more games tend to exhibit glitches with them.
