How resource-intensive is Mint compared to Ubuntu (when running Gnome, that is)? And how easy is it to... tweak it out to run even better? I have another oldie (Lightning Bolt, see my profile) with a P3 & 256MB RAM and I'm probably going to make it my main rig but I'm still debating what distro to install. I tried the XFCE version of Mint, but it was just too minimalistic, I hated it and switched to Ubuntu on my sig rig.

Also, is there a version of Mint based on 8.19 out already?

I find Mint to be about the same as ubuntu so you won't see much of a difference performance wise. It is just as easy to tweak, and mess around with (see screenshot). You can try the Gnome version of Mint, it should run just fine. I would scale back the effects on your system however.

The beta for Linux Mint 6 (based on the 8.10 Ubuntu) is out now and it shouldn't be long before it comes out in its entirety. From what I have heard, the difference from 8.04 to 8.10 is very minimal so I wouldn't wait for it.

Mint is about the same. as i have mentioned before, given 8mb of video memory and 512 mb of ram it (my virtualised mint install) runs fine. though i tried giving it 256mb it ran fine as well, though i decided to give it 512 since that is what is recommended. i have little doubt in saying that if you install i it will give your rig a new lease of life .

there is a version of Mint based on 8.10 - it's Mint 6 RC1, but i would wait for a bit till it becomes official... it isn't too different from mint 5 but a lot of the mint apps have gained added functionality. i can see myself enjoying a lot of the features such as tabbed file browsing in GNOME.

also, glad you're happy with Mint, Madmaximus

I ran it in a Virtual machine and it seemed like a pretty good improvement over Elyssa.

And thanks for making me co-founder, my fellow OCN mint bringer!

lol. you deserved it wierdo.

i tried it microsis under the same conditions as wierdo, and loved it. i am waiting for it to release fully so i can install it on my dedicated mint partition.

as mint 5 is an LTS release i will be keeping a few ISOs as spare backups in case i need to install that for whatever reason. otherwise, Felicia, i can't wait to get acquainted

I dont want to start a new thread cause i think i can ask for help here(if not, tell me please)

OK so I'm a total noob to linux but i'm a uber quick learner. hmmm I have installed ubuntu 8.04 about 2 weeks ago on my old rig and am having fun with it, learning lots. But I stumbled on my first real problem couple days ago.

I was trying to enable the driver for my X1650 512mb to get the cool effects. So i did that, "downloaded the driver and installed", then rebooted. All seemed ok until i get to the log on screen, but to my surprise, no log on screen, just a black screen. So i did a little research on Google and found im not the only one with that problem. So after a lil reading and tinkering, the best result i got was successfully loging in but once i get to the desktop, i get a white screen. So in the end i did a fresh install of but now im asking you guys, should i just try to get the drivers from amd's site and once installed, enable the card?

On another note, I love how customizable this new os feels, and so light!! I'm more on my old rig than the new one(except for games) but ill still try to get some games running on linux like unreal and cs(gotta try).
