love that sig

Using mint 6 for the past month or so and i can say i do love it. Im a linux noob like many in this thread but mint really makes thing pretty easy to pick up. Installed it via the windows installer on the live cd cause i didnt feel like making a partition on the harddrive, and so far its pretty good at recognizing all my hardware. Been working on getting a few peripherals working (motoroko s9 headphones and my samsung T10) and so far ive got the headphones working but the T10 is still in need of more research. Now linux isnt for everyone but mint seems to really give you the tools to get started. To be honest, anyone with internet connection and patience could really learn it. Great distro and hoping to make this my main os as soon as i get steam working on mint lol.

^Steam on mint as easy. Games on Wine is a different story. Long story short, your mileage may vary. Some people can run most games fine. I can't get CS:Source running to save my life. Starts great, but crashes in minutes of joining a server.

Yeah, Steam is not too hard. You may need a workaround to install new games, but playing games you have already purchased is not usually much trouble (see notes in the Wine AppDB for each game).

well hai there.

as much as i love the idea of opensource linux distros, the control, feel and look of them, unless an OS can do what i want it to do, i just can't use it on a daily basis.

Gaming, web surfing and IM is pretty much all i do. how well does WINE work in running games? does it have a performance hit? do games actually work at all?

i would just like to learn more. i own 32 and 64 bit copies of both ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 desktop and server editions... but i never really delved into them much. havent even tried 8.10.

am i to take it mint doesn't use KDE? is there any real difference/benefit of KDE oer GNOME? should i just use mandriva?

i has a thirst for knowledge

You can always dual boot, go to Windows for gaming etc.

Wine does run many games with a performance hit. Not all your games will work. But, CS:S, TF2, CoD4 i believe, any many, many others run fairly well. Plus, rumors have it that Valve is trying to port the source engine to Linux, which would fling the flood gates open.

Go download yourself a copy of Mint 6 (best to get the latest and greatest), and try it out. If you like it, keep it. If not, you can be free of it. Never hurts to give something new a try.

KDE and GNOME are just two different window managers. Basically, the look is all they control. I'd advise against Mandriva for now, because it's not a beginners distro.

Have fun

hmm i did dual boot ubuntu with XP once. now that was an epic fail lol... apart from slowing down my XP install (somehow) and forgetting my password, not being able to uninstall it etc all led me to reformat the entire disc, it's just not practical to dual boot OSes. i usually switch between web browsing and gaming often, and rebooting every time is just stupid. if you're going to use windows, then you may as well use it for everything right? otherwise it kinda defeats the purpose of opensource OSes..

i just don't want to waste download (i only have 12 GB per month - crappy aussie internet for the lose) on something that is a bit of a novelty to play around with, but just isn't practical to play games on.

if linux played every game i wanted it to, windows would be gone. there really would be no reason to run windows to be perfectly honest.

unfortunately, its a two way street - game developers aren't going to develop for a platform that no one has, and consumers aren't going to use a platform that can't play their games. as the ine website says, wine tries to bridge the gap.

i guess my big question is - will wine run games reliably enough that i can play them with the same quality level i get in windows?

perhaps the end of windows is near... who would want to pay for an OS when you could get one free that has more options, more control, more speed... one that does everything windows can - and more?

but until linux can do everything windows can, it's a no go for me. sorry.
