So, how are they going? I heard they went open source a while back... do they have any drivers out already? My lappy has Atheros wireless and I'm thinking of installing Linux sometime soon, so I just want to know if there's anything going on... I don't want to go through the pain of installing MadWiFi

The driver is called madwifi and it's been working quite well for years now. There's nothing to "install" - it will already be there.

That's weird... back when I installed Ubuntu (8.04) on the lappy, the wireless didn't work... it appeared to be detected (proprietary drivers were in use), but it didn't show up in network devices/settings, and I had to go through some fancy terminal-heavy procedure to get MadWiFi installed.

So you're saying it should work out-of-box with most distros? 'cause that would be gold...

Yep, should be fine in 8.10. Ubuntu broke madwifi in 8.04, as I recall. And any other distro should be no problem.
