Default 64 bit required for 4gb+ ram?

I was wondering if linux suffers from the same constraints as windows does regarding 64bit vs 32bit and the RAM limit, in other words, do I need to get a 64bit version to utilize my 4+gb of RAM?

Thanks!

Windows 32 bit can handle up to 3.5G and that will be minus what the video card(s) have.
Linux, I do not know.... Thanks om3n, now I know

Yes, its not a limitation of Windows or any specific OS, its a limitation of the 32 bit architecture.

Not sure, but you might as well go with x64. Most apps come with i386,x86,x64,PPC versions anyway. Go with x64!

Some versions of windows and linux when using a PAE kernel can go over the 32bit memory limit, you can read more about PAE on Microsoft technet: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc784574.aspx
