So, you got it installed? If it's already installed, this should help:

Chances are the refresh rates for your monitor are way off...
Ctrl-alt-bksp to shut down xorg server
If you don't get back to the terminal, Ctrl-alt-f1 to terminal 1 (1-6 are text, 7-12 are graphical)
Run "xorgcfg -textmode", and select the most conservative monitor spec; if you know the horiz and vert refresh rates, select an option below what they are.

Run "startx" to get X back up. Hopefully that works.

i set the monitor up conservatively but then it says "write xorg.conf and quit" but when i choose that it says it couldnt write it, do i need it to write or just exit?

also i dont know the lingo but it always says temporary failure in name resolution or something when the kernels(?) are loading

1 You need to be root to run xorgcfg -textmode. I really should've mentioned that. Sorry for confusion

2 Name resolution probably means you can't get online and it tried when updating the time to the clock server...don't worry about that now.

Just "sudo xorgcfg -textmode". That should work, as you're in ubuntu...
