http://wiki.winehq.org/BenchMark-0.9.5 Not gaming related but there are benchmarks that show Firefox running in WINE is faster than native Linux firefox. This shows that WINE is not a speed impediment for apps. Remember, WINE is not a Windows emulator, it is an application layer -- essentially a stripped down version of Windows, which may explain some of the performance differences.

Nice guide. I didn't know you could run steam in Linux that is pretty sweet.

Pushing users away from ATI will only make the situation worse. Most 3D open source games and applications like Wine (and even Compiz), are developed around nvidia drivers and hardware. This is mostly out of necessity (good ATI drivers are a rather new thing) and out of greater availability of nvidia class hardware (due to a bigger user base). If people keep avoiding ATI, compatibility with their drivers and cards will continue to be low.
This "nvidia only" mentality can also retard the acceptance and use of open source drivers for gaming. The nvidia binary is very intrusive, so something that is designed to work with it will not always work with other "Linux compliant" drivers. ATI cards work fine. Windows games that have Linux clients work with no problems. So do most open source games, except the ones that make specific calls to the nvidia driver for functionality (in this case they either exhibit some glitches or run slow). The best way to resolve this situation is by using ATI cards or switching to open source drivers. Users should then get involved with their favorite games and start demanding greater compatibility with other drivers. Remember that Linux is mostly user driven, so if users keep with their nvidia affair developers will simply keep the status quo.

This is cool and all and I'm bookmarking this page for my next endevour.
But Windows gaming is much easier. Until Linux has installers for videogames, that won't change

Ya, good point. Another way to do it is just dual boot windows and linux. Windows for games, and everything else do linux. Run virtual linux on windows is a thought as well, but that would be sacrilege to a core linux user.

At this point though I have to say that I'm happy im not dual booting anymore. It's nice to have it all in one solid place. The challenge of making games bend to my will in Linux has made me a better computer enthusiast, and has bettered my career as a Linux Sys Admin. Not to mention make me appreciate my games that much more.

I agree, dual booting is a pain, especially if you run a system where you test OC's a lot and you want quick booting. I've been looking into linux benchmarking programs lately. Stripping the windows crap out is starting to look better and better, especially with Vista. I started out hating Vista, then loving it, now I'm hating it again. A guy I work with turned me on to the Phoronix site which is pretty cool.
