Great post. Definitely going to try some of this out later. I always manage to miss the steps when it comes to codecs/.NET stuff in Wine, so it's nice to have this all come together.

Don't take it personally. You'll see the spam everyone is talking about. Nice guide though.

Not sure if it matters but your way installs the Nov 2008 dx. http://filehippo.com/download_directx/ has the releases, and most recent.

one thing you didn't mention: virtually every game run under WINE is buggy and slow. Windows already does everything i want it to do. Why would i want to switch?

I don't think this is supposed to convert people, just allow the linux folk to enjoy windows games without the OS.

Agreed - it could convert people (as not being able tom game on Linux is a huge barrier for most), but it's not the primary mission of this post.

I've got a question though - if you install all of those Windows libraries, won't that bulk up your whole Linux install, and ruin the point of running it? Or have I misunderstood how Wine & Linux operate?

Essentially the entire windows "install" as it were, is in a single folder in the users home directory. So no, the total "bulk" size of this is about 200MB. Though I personally have a bunch of tweaks and extra goodies that bumped it up to 2GB. But that's just me being excessive. Most Wine installs hover between 200 - 400MB.

So it doesn't really clutter the system as it amounts to just another program on my system rather than being scattered all around my computer. Additionally it doesn't run unless your request a windows program to run, so again, mess free. No wasted ram.

I haven't seen any real issues with having a DX version only just a few months out of date. The November release is what many people seem to be using these days in Linux. (At least on the Appdb)

and thanks for the +rep

I'm not really trying to convert people. I'm just trying to get the facts on the table so people can have the freedom to do what they really want to do with their computers. People shouldn't be limited to windows if the features they may need are available to them in Linux. So I am presenting to that user that there is light at the end of the tunnel if you have Linux and want to game. Linux does do games, and it does them pretty darn well.

Excellent post, looks like you're going to be an asset to OCN!

However, why go to all the trouble to do this, when Windows will do it better? Answer: none.

Nice to know that if I had to run Linux, I could still game, but IMO Ubuntu needs native DX9/DX10 before it will become a truly viable gaming OS. This is why I'm staying with Vista. It may be bloated, and it may love to om nom nom ram and harddrive space, but damnit everything I want to run runs just fine on it.

Also, needs moar fullscreen. If it will run in fullscreen, as it does in Windows, please add this + screenshots to the OP. Idunno about you, but the one thing more distracting than griefers is seeing half your desktop to the right...makes me want to shoot my icons, mistaking them for targets, and often miss things...blarg.

Answer: I use my computer for more than games and I don't see any point in buying another computer to accomplish those ends. Additionally i believe there is something to gain from learning a *nix environment. It's a professional skill and an edge over the typical Windows only professional. I have more versatility with a linux system than I do a Windows only system. Clearly this is an opinionated statement, but after learning all there is to know about Windows (5+ professional years in network administration, Network support and network engineering) I still see no positive benefits from using a strictly principled Windows world.

I didn't use fullscreen pics simply because I would have been accused of getting windows screenshots. When the game is fullscreen you cant tell it's running on Linux, however if I put them to windowed mode you can see the Linux desktop.
