Don't do killall gdm
a better solution would be to do
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
then install the drivers
then
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

on my ubuntu 8.10 with the 8800gt this works flawless everytime

you can monitor board temp with nvclock -T
(this might be included in driver, or you can get it from apt-get)
and change fan speed with nvclick -fF 1-100
(the F means force, so you break it dont come crying to me :P)
works great here
and nvclock -i gives a buch of info such as clock speeds, voltages, fan speed,

thers options to change gpu and mem clock with it, but thats never worked here

also, I've heard it also breaks things on Sabayon(gentoo based)

for the people that broke the GUI , uninstall the driver(i think the installer has that option)
then you're gonna have to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
the Device driver to something else
not 100% what
google it some
my sig rig thats using onborad graphics has it as "fglrx"

sig rig , on borad ati

Section "Device"

Identifier "SabayonVga0"
Driver "fglrx"

EndSection

8800gt with the nvidia drivers
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection

(use vim, nano, or emacs to edit)

Up until recently this process has been almost a circus act with how many hoops one had to jump through in order to properly utilize a modern GPU. Installing GPU drivers has become a process so simple it's merely procedural. The following guide documents this process.

The process below is described for Ubuntu and other Debian-like Linux Distributions
  • Go to the Nvidia driver download web page and fill in all the appropriate fields with your relevant setup. [Link]

  • Download the .run file (In my case NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.51-pkg2.run) to your home folder

This next part you will want to print out or write down as proceeding from here will kill your desktop and browser. (But thats what we want)
  • Press [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [F5] to drop to a TTY command prompt(This sometimes takes pressing the key sequence 2-3 times before it switches)
  • Login with your user name and pass
  • Type the following:

Code:
sudo killall gdm
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.51-pkg2.run
  • Hit enter on all the [OK] prompts
  • Say [Yes] to the 32-bit compatibility drivers
  • Say [Yes] to Updating your X configuration
  • When it finishes it will return you to the command prompt, type:

Code:
sudo gdm
  • Done!
  • You'll notice your Nvidia X Configuration App in System > Preferences > NVIDIA X Server Settings
  • If you want to Overclock, see my post on Nvidia Overclocking

1 issue... you update 9.04 with a GTX260 and your display stops working. then you reinstall them (unintsalling the the previous drivers of course) and the damn thing will not work in compiz cube when it worked before

Default . . . and demystify it did!

Caedis,

Thanks for the tutorial, worked fabulously. I've been bouncing around the 'net' for days now; racking my brain on how to get this beast loaded. I am no programmer, hacker, etc. (I do good to get it booted) - I just want to say how much this kind of help is appreciated by people like me. Again thanks.
