couldn't you just open a root terminal and do this
Code:
init 3

boot to init 3 by adding a 3 to your kernel options from your grub menu?

i do not recommend to use sudo killall gdm , it abruptly shuts off all services , i'd suggest the following codes instead of that :
Quote:
1) i use sudo -i instead of sudo , as in i get on root prompt
2) and then /etc/init.d/gdm stop (this stops gdm)
after installing drivers then
3) /etc/init.d/gdm start

that must help everyone there

`killall gdm` does the exact same thing as stopping gdm that way. It sends a kill code to the process, which then sends a kill code to all underlying processes. It's not much different.

If you doubt me, take a look at /etc/init.d/gdm. IIRC it should `killall -5 gdm` when it's stopped.

Default Did exactly as everyone said, wont work

Okay, please help me here.

I did as everyone said, and tried every suggestion but as I installed the new nvidia drivers, I cant get gdm to start up again. Now I am locked out of Ubuntu (via black screen) and there is no way I can get a clean boot. All I can do is bring up the root terminal.

I have been installing and reinstalling the drivers, but it is no good. All I have gotten from gdm is low graphics mode, but everything is frozen. The mouse won't even move.

'nvidia-xconfig' does nothing

I am running on a laptop, with 9400M chipset running 185. drivers.

Running Jaunty AMD64 (is that the problem?)

Anyway, more suggestions would be nice, also a method to uninstall these drivers so I can get into gnome would work too.

EDIT, I just figured it out:

When running the installation utility on the driver installer, add the '--uninstall' suffix to uninstall the drivers.

So it will look like this:
Code:
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.36-pkg2.run --uninstall
It fixed everything
