Default Help with Linux

Is there a way I can install Ubuntu on the same drive as my windows, with out losing my windows files? I have no where to back stuff up, so it would have to go on top of windows some how.

Is this possiable? (Sorry, I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to Dual Booting)

You cant install it on the same partition, but there are ways to shrink partitions so you can make another one. You just need to make sure that the disk is a basic disk, not a dynamic disk, as you cannot install other OS's on dynamic disks. (You can check if a disk is basic or dynamic in Disk Managment)

Its basic. By shrinking it, will I lose anything? How much do you think I'll need to install Ubuntu?

There's always the possibility of data loss when modifying a partition. I haven't lost anything during the two times I shrunk an NTFS partition, but danger still lurks.

Well.. Right now im in Ubuntu (And LOVING it). I'm only on the Live CD, until I can get my stuff backed up and reformat, making it dual boot (I'll ask on how to do that later ).

Will my settings change once I restart, since I'm on a live CD?

Also, can I access my windows files (ex. music in my documents) from Linux? And what is a good Linux media player?

As far as filesystems go, some swear by Reiser, others ext3, &c. I'd personally make a small root partition formatted with ext2, and then create /usr and /home with Reiser, or something.

if you make a shared partition and mount it into ubuntu should work.
