Ubuntu is i386.

You haven't mentioned whether you will be responsible to maintain the server or not? If so I take it that you'll be sharing a single physical machine with multiple users. In which case using a light-weight distro might be best, but gentoo might be overkill as compiling packages would use the full CPU, which would kill the response time on any other users sites

That just proves my statement even more

Try Arch Linux if you think Gentoo is going to use too much CPU time.

I'd suggest Ubuntu 9.04 (it's super-fast with ext4), but maybe pick a lighter flavour like Xubuntu, or maybe Crunchbang if you don't mind deviating from Ubuntu main?

You do realize if he's just going to SSH into his server having Ubuntu, Xubuntu or Kubuntu isn't going to do a difference at all

Try the Ubuntu server version if anything. Gentoo and Arch Linux still stays as my primary recommendation.

Doh - I had it round the wrong way!
Yeah, forget the Window Manager, CLI is the way (if you can cope with it!!)

Well honestly, if you're going to install Linux, you can only expect to do some CLI work

Compiling the sources with the package manager for your exact system might prove faster too, not to mention that Ubuntu is only i486 (edit: It's actually i386) while Gentoo also is i686 compatible.
The performance gains I used to see when I was compiling everything from source on Arch64 wasn't really worth the time it took

Bingo Arch is V.lean and doesn't even come with a window manager

Gaming huh. You expect to tunnel game traffic thru this? Probably not the best idea.

Id go with debian or gentoo though for sure, since Arch isnt an option.
