Networking Nut

I'm trying to host a server that holds profiles that I can log on to from different workstations connected via LAN to the said server; pretty much how schools have it set up, just that I'm trying to do it with a linux server (CentOS) and workstation (Fedora). I installed Samba and SWAT with yum. Where do I go from here?
Notice: My Testing and Development Server will be Fedora for now. The workstations will indefinitely run Fedora. When I understand this better I will change the server to CentOS. Thanks! Last edited by Lyoko : 05-25-09 at 10:30 PM |

Are you trying to host files with Samba or access another Samba-compatible folder?

AFAIK Samba uses the accounts on the Linux box, so you might to have to set up a domain if you're planning to share this with multiple people.
I'm not good on networking so you'd need to know how domain networking works.

Ok, you need to look into a few issues:
__________________1) how do you plan to do authentication? (share level, user level? using local password database, domain controller, LDAP, etc.) Get this working first. you should read this: http://samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samb...html#id2559134 2) you'll need to understand how Windows profiles work. then you'll need to configure your accounts to use roaming profiles that you'll host on the samba server. You can read more about profile shares: http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samb...ndows_Profiles Finally, if you look at the Samba Guide here, there are a few examples you can use to get you started: http://samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/ Setting up Samba correctly isn't hard, but it's a bit involved and requires you to understand how the technology works. You need to understand that Samba provides many features that are kind of lumped together and keeping them clearly separated in your mind will help; things like authentication, network shares, printer shares, profile shares, etc. are all separate features.
